Golf Course Living in St. Augustine

Golf Course Living in St. Augustine

The Oldest City in the United States is home to many fantastic features, from world-class food to unmatched history, wonderful wildlife, and blissful beaches. For those looking to venture to St. Augustine, Florida, one of the greatest draws is consistent temperatures and predictable weather (even the afternoon rain shower is on schedule in the summer here). With years of visitor growth, this area has become a well-known and loved destination for those looking to explore all things Florida, and that, of course, includes golf course living.

There are many reasons to be curious about golf course living. For some, it’s the love of the game, with daily opportunities to play. For others, it’s the beautiful landscaping, peaceful surroundings, and the sense of community that comes with it. On top of that, golf itself offers numerous health benefits. Playing regularly can improve heart health, lower the risk of cardiovascular disease, and support lung function. It also encourages spending time outdoors and enjoying life on the green.

Before we go any further, a quick fun fact! Golf and St. Augustine go back hundreds of years, literally. Right here in town, the St. Augustine Golf Club opened as a three-hole course in the shadow of the Castillo de San Marcos (then called Fort Marion) in 1895. It would be expanded to nine holes before closing down and making way for the elegant Victorian-style houses along San Marco Avenue.

World Golf Village

It is no surprise to anyone that St. Augustine is home to many golf courses and clubs. One of the most notable is King & Bear, located in World Golf Village. A phenomenal track, King & Bear is notable for golf history lovers as it is the only course in the world designed by Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus. You’ll also find Slammer & Squire, designed by Sam Snead (The Slammer) and Gene Sarazen (The Squire) to showcase the natural beauty of the area.

Even with these incredible courses, there is so much more to World Golf Village. It is one of the fastest-growing commercial areas in St. Augustine with plenty of fun restaurants and shops to visit. There is tremendous resale value for golf lovers and people wanting to take advantage of Florida living without bringing their clubs.

Marsh Creek Country Club

One community that we have to mention is Marsh Creek Country Club. Disclaimer: We are members, and it is the absolute best! The course is tucked away in a scenic location on the backside of Anastasia Island, providing sunsets that are unparalleled on the Atlantic Coast. Residents also benefit from a variety of amenities, including tennis courts, a clubhouse, and fitness facilities.

The course is located in a gated community that is quiet and charming, making it ideal for those who want a peaceful lifestyle while still enjoying easy access to the city and local attractions. With its blend of natural beauty, recreation, and comfort, Marsh Creek offers a lifestyle that captures the best of golf course living. However, it’s worth noting that you do not need to be a member of the club in order to own a home in the community.

Royal St. Augustine Golf & Country Club and St. Augustine Shores Golf Club

If you’re looking for a more laid-back environment, Royal St. Augustine, St Johns Golf Club, and St. Augustine Shores might be just the home you’re looking for. There are no gated communities or guard houses here, but there are plenty of chances to live right on the fairway of your new favorite hole. All three public courses offer monthly and yearly memberships, which can be a budget-friendly option without sacrificing on the quality of golf. St. Johns Golf Club underwent a major renovation in 2020 and returned the routing and green shapes to a classic look. Meanwhile, St. Augustine Shores has been steadily working on its own refurbishment, elevating the course with new bunkering and fresh grass on the fairways, roughs, and greens.

The Palencia Club

North of St. Augustine is a hidden paradise. Palencia, with townhouses, apartments, and a variety of larger properties that range in style and beauty, has something for everyone.

The golf course is nothing short of spectacular. “Shaped by the natural beauty of the land,” The Palencia Club is routed through “centuries-old maritime oak trees and along the Intracoastal Waterway and the Tolomato River”. Pro Tip: If you’d like a peek behind the gates, visitors are welcome to enjoy the Tolomato River Boardwalk.

The Palencia Town Center is a great base for families. There are top schools nearby, and St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra, and Jacksonville are all a short drive away along US-1. Demand for all types of properties remains high, regardless of season, in Palencia.

Ponte Vedra Beach Clubs

Continuing our little trek north up A1A brings us to Ponte Vedra, a quiet community (except for one week of the year) between St. Augustine and Jacksonville. This town is a golfer’s dream with multiple championship-level golf courses and clubs. TPC Sawgrass, Sawgrass Country Club, Marsh Landing Country Club, and The Plantation are just a taste of the clubs that combine golf and coastal living in a way few communities can.

A Sound Investment

Buying a home in a golf community isn’t just about the property itself. It’s about the lifestyle that comes with it. Amazing views, amenities like clubhouses, and social events make sure there is always something to do. These neighborhoods tend to be quiet, gated communities, providing added security for residents.

So, is golf course living worth the investment? The answer is yes. Golf course homes generally hold their value well, and the demand for residency near or in a golf course community remains high. Even with economic downturns, golf course homes are created with growth in mind, so that property and home values appreciate over time. St. Augustine is growing, and with growth comes more buyer interest. More people want to retire or relocate to a town that fits their lifestyle. For anyone looking for a St. Augustine residence built with comfort and lasting value in mind, a golf course home is truly a smart investment.
